How many pens does it hold?
Around thirty standard pens, or about fifteen plus a ruler and a small calculator. The canvas gives slightly, so it does not feel packed.
Is the zip metal or plastic?
Metal, with a fabric pull tab. Metal zips outlast plastic ones in a backpack, which is where most pouches fail first.
Can I wash it?
Cold hand wash and air dry. A machine wash will not ruin it, but the canvas softens and loses some of its structure.
